Reading

Hello and welcome to 5C  Fifth grade is an exciting year -  the last year of elementary school.  We have a lot of learning, a lot of work to do to get ready for middle school.  Parents, we appreciate your support as we achieve our goals.

My name is Brenda Connel-Ross.  About six years after receiving a B.A. in Business Management, I decided to go into teaching and earned my teacher's certification.  I have been teaching a total of 19 years, and have taught at LBJ for 17 years.  I have a Master of Arts in Teaching English, and teach one evening class  for pre-service teachers each semester in the English Education Department at UTEP.

I am co-teaching with Mrs. Montes, and am teaching reading, language arts, and social studies.  We're focusing on informational text at the moment, as well as studying about the birth of this great country in social studies.  Our time is filled with vocabulary studies, poetry, independent reading, shared reading.  I try to integrate as much active learning as possible, which is when children are working together to guide their own learning.

I do assign homework!!!  Each child is to be reading a library book every night for 20 to 30 minutes uninterrupted.  If they complete their reading log, they can bring it in to me, and I will give them a coupon for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut.  Reading is the best thing they can do to improve their skills in that area.

You can contact me at (915) 236-3925 to schedule an appointment, and I am available for conference from 2:30 to 3:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.
